How to Play in the Hexi Corridor for 7 Days? Dunhuang In, Lanzhou Out, Pure Play Slow Tour Without Backtracking

When mentioning the Hexi Corridor, many people’s first reaction is sunshine, Dunhuang, Mogao Caves, and Jiayuguan.

But only after walking the entire route will you discover—the Hexi Corridor is not just a scenic spot, but a civilization corridor spanning a thousand years.

From the Silk Road to frontier passes; from grotto art to snow-capped mountains and grasslands; from desert Gobi to Danxia canyons, it is more like a continuous historical and geographical experience.

Because of this, for the first visit to the Hexi Corridor, it is not recommended to use a check-in style of play, nor to pack the itinerary full for a low price.

If you only have about 7 days and want pure play, no shopping, no rushing, especially for families, parent-child trips, or traveling with parents, this slow tour route entering from Dunhuang and exiting from Lanzhou will be a more comfortable choice.

Detailed Itinerary

D1 Arrive in Dunhuang | Give Your Body Some Time to Adjust

Itinerary: Nationwide → Dunhuang

After arriving in Dunhuang, check in upon pickup. It is not recommended to arrange high-intensity activities on the same day.

Although Dunhuang’s altitude is not high, the northwest climate is relatively dry. Combined with most tourists experiencing long flights or transfers, leaving the first day for rest will make the overall experience noticeably more relaxed.

If time permits, you can simply experience the urban atmosphere of Dunhuang and rest early.

Recommended pace:

  • Don’t rush to scenic spots;
  • Acclimate to the climate;
  • Reserve energy for the official journey.

D2 Dunhuang | Yangguan, Yumenguan, Yadan Devil City Sunset

雅丹魔鬼城
Yadan Devil City
敦煌玉门关
Dunhuang Yumenguan

Theme of the day: Frontier sites × Gobi landscapes

Main attractions:

  • Yangguan
  • Yumenguan
  • Yadan Devil City (sunset)

Today is the day you truly enter the historical scene of the Hexi Corridor.

“West of Yangguan there are no old friends”—many people truly understand this phrase for the first time when standing at the Yangguan ruins.

Continuing west, you can reach the Yumenguan ruins and feel the desolation of the ancient Silk Road exit point.

In the afternoon, it is recommended to focus on Yadan Devil City.

Compared to daytime, the Yadan at sunset has richer layers, with obvious changes in light and shadow. The entire landscape seems illuminated, and it is also the best time for photography.

Return to Dunhuang for overnight stay the same day.

D3 Dunhuang | Mogao Caves × Mingsha Mountain Crescent Lake

鸣沙山月牙泉
Mingsha Mountain Crescent Lake
莫高窟
Mogao Caves

Theme of the day: Silk Road art × Desert sunset

Main attractions:

  • Mogao Caves
  • Mingsha Mountain Crescent Lake (sunset)

Coming to the Hexi Corridor, the Mogao Caves are almost an unavoidable core.

This is not just a scenic spot, but more like an art history spanning a thousand years.

It is recommended to book tickets in advance (at least one month in advance during peak summer vacation, otherwise only emergency tickets are available), and allocate more than half a day—do not rush the visit.

After returning to the city for rest in the afternoon, head to Mingsha Mountain Crescent Lake.

Compared to the midday sun, entering the desert in the evening will feel much more comfortable.

Watching the sunset slowly descend as the colors of the dunes continuously change is the most memorable scene of Dunhuang for many people.

There may also be a romantic stargazing concert in the desert. However, this activity is not available every day, especially during summer when it may be adjusted or canceled. It is recommended to consult the scenic area or local guide before traveling to avoid regrets.

Continue overnight in Dunhuang the same day.

D4 Dunhuang → Guazhou → Yulin Caves → Suoyang City → Jiayuguan

Theme of the day: Grotto art × Silk Road sites

Main attractions:

  • Gobi Sculpture Group
  • Suoyang City Ruins
  • Yulin Caves

After leaving Dunhuang, the Hexi Corridor begins to enter a deeper cultural section.

Yulin Caves are often called “Little Mogao,” with fewer tourists but high artistic value.

Suoyang City retains the spatial sense of ancient Silk Road city ruins.

Compared to popular scenic spots, this day is more suitable for those who like history, culture, and in-depth experiences.

Arrive in Jiayuguan for overnight stay in the evening.

D5 Jiayuguan → Colorful Danxia → Zhangye

张掖七彩丹霞
Zhangye Colorful Danxia

Theme of the day: Frontier pass × Danxia sunset

Main attractions:

  • Jiayuguan Fortress
  • Overhanging Great Wall
  • The First Beacon Tower Under Heaven
  • Colorful Danxia (Sunset)

In the morning, walk into Jiayuguan facing the morning light.

This is the most majestic pass at the western end of the Ming Great Wall.

It is also the starting point in the hearts of countless people to truly understand the “frontier pass”.

In the afternoon, head west all the way to Zhangye. Embark on a visual feast of the colorful Danxia.

It is strongly recommended to schedule the itinerary at sunset.

When the angle of the setting sun is low, light and shadows flow.

 The colors of the mountains will layer and blend like an oil painting.

This will be the stop with the most extreme visual impact on the entire grand loop.

As night falls, accompanied by the afterglow of Danxia. Tonight, we fall asleep peacefully in Zhangye.

D6 Zhangye|Mati Temple × Qilian Mountains × Shandan Royal Horse Farm

马蹄寺
Mati Temple
青甘大环线祁连山草原
Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop Qilian Mountain Grassland

Today’s theme: A day of grasslands and grottoes

Main attractions:

  • Mati Temple
  • Qilian Mountain scenery
  • Shandan Royal Horse Farm

If the previous days’ itinerary was a profound baptism of humanities and history.

 Then today, we will officially switch to natural scenery mode.

In the morning, enter Mati Temple.

 See thousand-year-old grottoes, deep canyons, and steep mountains perfectly blend here.

Continue heading towards the Qilian Mountains.

The grasslands, pastures, and snow-capped mountains along the way are slowly unfolding with the wheels.

Arrive at the vast Shandan Royal Horse Farm.

Here the view is open, the pace is relaxed, very suitable for parent-child families to experience slowly.

As night falls, accompanied by the gentle breeze of the grassland.

We return to Zhangye to rest.

D7 Zhangye → Pingshanhu Grand Canyon → Wuwei → Lanzhou

平山湖大峡谷
Pingshanhu Grand Canyon

Today’s theme: Canyon landform × Liangzhou culture conclusion

Main attractions:

  • Pingshanhu Grand Canyon
  • Wuwei Leitai Cultural Scenic Area
  • Kumarajiva Temple
  • Tiantishan Grottoes
  • Wushaoling Viewing Platform

Continue east on the last day.

Pingshanhu Grand Canyon has typical northwest canyon landforms with strong visual tension.

After entering Wuwei, the humanistic atmosphere returns.

Liangzhou culture, grotto art, and Silk Road history conclude the entire Hexi Corridor journey.

Finally arrive in Lanzhou, and return according to flight or high-speed rail.

Who is this 7-day Hexi Corridor route suitable for?

✔ Those coming to the Hexi Corridor for the first time, hoping to complete the classic section in one go
✔ Parent-child families, hoping for a comfortable pace without rushing
✔ Those traveling with parents, not wanting to bear the pressure of long-distance self-driving
✔ Couples, friends in small groups, hoping for higher freedom
✔ Those who like history, humanities, grottoes, and Silk Road culture
✔ Those who want to see diverse scenery of deserts, grasslands, snow mountains, and Danxia

Who might not be suitable?

✘ Only pursuing the lowest price
✘ Can accept frequent shopping arrangements
✘ Want to complete the entire Hexi Corridor in 3 days
✘ High-intensity sightseeing every day
✘ No requirements for accommodation, vehicles, and services

Why is it not recommended to only look at low prices for the first trip to the Hexi Corridor?

The Hexi Corridor is a typical long-distance trip.

What truly determines the experience is often not the price, but:

  • Whether the itinerary pace is reasonable;
  • Whether it’s pure play without shopping;
  • Whether ticket reservations are stable;
  • Whether the driver is familiar with the route;
  • Whether a formal travel contract is signed;
  • Whether the elderly and children can adapt;
  • Whether time is left for sunset, rest, and weather flexibility.

Cheap is not necessarily bad, but too low a price often means compressing accommodation, adding shopping, self-paid items, or frequent vehicle changes.

For the first time to the Hexi Corridor, rather than pursuing “seeing the most”, it’s better to slow down the pace.

Because what really stays in memory is often not how many attractions visited in a day, but the wind in Dunhuang on a certain evening, the city of Jiayuguan, the clouds of Qilian Mountains, and the vastness of the Hexi Corridor slowly unfolding as you head east.
