When it comes to traveling in Northwest China, the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop (also known as the Northwest Grand Loop or Gansu-Qinghai Grand Loop) is almost an unavoidable classic route.
The vast azure of Qinghai Lake, the sky mirror of Chaka Salt Lake, the majestic expanse of Chaerhan Salt Lake, the millennia-old civilization of Dunhuang Mogao Caves, the desert wonder of Mingsha Mountain Crescent Lake, and the vibrant colors of Zhangye Colorful Danxia together form the “Great Northwest” in the hearts of countless travelers.
However, for tourists holding foreign passports, the traditional Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop cannot always be fully replicated from standard online guides.
Due to limited reception conditions for foreign tourists in some areas of Qinghai and certain accommodation points (including Da Qaidam, Delingha, and Mangya in Haixi Prefecture) as well as Qilian County not accepting foreigners, many discover when planning their itinerary:
- Some hotels cannot process check-ins
- Original routes need temporary adjustments
- Overnight stays cannot be arranged in some areas
- The classic loop cannot be fully replicated
But this does not mean foreign tourists cannot experience the traditional Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop.
In fact, by reasonably optimizing the route, it is still possible to easily connect core attractions such as Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Chaerhan Salt Lake, Dunhuang, Jiayuguan, Zhangye Danxia, and Qilian Grassland, staying at policy-friendly locations while ensuring a smooth itinerary and preserving the most essential parts of the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop to the greatest extent.
For overseas Chinese and foreign tourists visiting Northwest China for the first time, this is actually a more worry-free and comfortable way to travel.
One: Why recommend this foreigner-friendly Qinghai-Gansu Loop?
Compared to the traditional route, this optimized itinerary has several obvious advantages:
✔ All accommodation locations can normally receive foreign tourists
✔ Avoids areas prone to accommodation issues
✔ Retains the most representative natural landscapes of the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop
✔ More comfortable pacing, no need for frequent hotel changes
✔ Suitable for independent travel, private car tours, and private customized small groups
Although the route has been slightly adjusted, the travel experience is almost undiminished, and many unnecessary troubles are reduced.

Three: 8-Day Reference Itinerary for Foreign Tourists on the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop
Day 1 Xining|First Encounter with the Gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau
After arriving in Xining, it is recommended to use the first day as a buffer to acclimate to the plateau environment.
As the eastern gateway to the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xining blends diverse cultures including Han, Tibetan, and Hui. Strolling through Dongguan Mosque and wandering Mojia Street and Limeng Commercial District, you can feel the unique Northwest urban atmosphere.
Recommended tasting: hand-grabbed lamb, kang pot lamb, etc.
Accommodation: Xining
Day 2 Xining → Qinghai Lake → Chaka Town

After leaving Xining, crossing Riyue Mountain, you officially enter the plateau scenery zone.
Qinghai Lake is China’s largest inland saltwater lake and one of the most representative landscapes of the entire Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop.
In summer, by Qinghai Lake, golden rapeseed flowers and azure lake water complement each other; in autumn, it presents a more vast and pure plateau scene.
Compared to the scenic area itself, the Ring Lake Highway is often more charming.
Along the way, herds of cattle and sheep, lake and sky merging into one, is a paradise for photography enthusiasts.
Accommodation: Chaka Town
Day 3 Chaka Salt Lake → Chaerhan Salt Lake → Golmud

Today you will see two distinctly different salt lake landscapes.
In the morning, visit Chaka Salt Lake.
On clear days, the white salt surface blends with the sky, hence it is known as the “China Sky Mirror.”
Then head to Chaerhan Salt Lake.
Unlike Chaka’s delicate dreaminess, Chaerhan Salt Lake presents a breathtaking vastness.
It possesses world-class salt mine resources, and the famous “Ten-Thousand-Meter Salt Bridge” spans across the salt lake, one of Qinghai’s most unique geological landscapes.
Accommodation: Golmud
Day 4 Golmud → Qaidam Basin → Akesai

Today is the day with the most “Great Northwest” character on the entire route.
After leaving Golmud, head north along National Highway G315.
Along the way, you can glimpse the emerald green surface of Da Qaidam Emerald Lake from afar, forming a stark contrast with the desolate Gobi. (Emerald Lake does not accept foreigners, and overnight stays in Da Qaidam Town are not possible)
Then cross the vast Qaidam Basin.
Vast Gobi, saline-alkali wasteland, highways stretching to the horizon—this is the “Great Northwest” in many people’s impressions.
Arrive in Akesai Oil Town in the afternoon.
Abandoned buildings and desolate streets form a unique landscape, and have also become filming locations for many film and television works.
Accommodation: Aksay
Day 5 Aksay → Dunhuang

After crossing Dangjin Mountain, officially enter the Hexi Corridor.
Dunhuang is one of the most shining names on the ancient Silk Road.
Go to Mingsha Mountain Crescent Lake in the afternoon.
Golden sand dunes and the thousand-year-old Crescent Lake that never dries up together form one of China’s most famous desert landscapes.
Riding camels, climbing sand mountains, and watching the sunset are all must-experience activities in Dunhuang.
Accommodation: Dunhuang
Day 6 Dunhuang In-depth Exploration

Today, dedicate time to Dunhuang’s most important cultural heritage.
The Mogao Caves have endured for thousands of years, preserving a large number of precious murals and colored sculptures, known as the “Oriental Art Treasure House”.
Even for tourists unfamiliar with Buddhist art, this place still has extremely strong visual impact.
In the afternoon, you can continue to Mingsha Mountain or take a leisurely stroll in Dunhuang city.
Accommodation: Dunhuang
Day 7 Dunhuang → Jiayuguan → Zhangye

Travel east along the Hexi Corridor.
First arrive at Jiayuguan Pass City.
This is an important pass at the western end of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall, and also an important node on the ancient Silk Road.
Then head to Zhangye Colorful Danxia.
Under the setting sun, the layered colorful mountains resemble a natural oil painting, one of China’s most representative Danxia landforms.
Accommodation: Zhangye
Day 8 Zhangye → Qilian Grassland → Xining
On the last day, return to Xining along National Highway 227.
When passing through the Qilian Grassland, you can stop at scenic spots along the way to take photos.
In summer, the grassland is green and vast, with snow-capped mountains undulating in the distance, and cattle and sheep leisurely scattered throughout.
Many people visiting here for the first time will exclaim that the scenery before them is as beautiful as a computer desktop.
Return to Xining in the evening, concluding this wonderful Northwest China journey.
Four: Who is this route suitable for?
If you are:
- Overseas Chinese holding foreign passports
- International tourists
- Traveling to Northwest China for the first time
- Hoping to reduce itinerary uncertainties
- Prefer travel styles that combine natural scenery with historical culture
Then this foreigner-friendly version of the Qinghai-Gansu loop will be more practical than copying traditional guides.
Conclusion
For foreign tourists, the biggest challenge in planning the Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop is often not how far the road is, but uncertainty about which places can be visited, which hotels can be stayed at, and whether the itinerary will change temporarily.
In fact, as long as the route is planned reasonably, these issues can be avoided in advance.
Although it’s not possible to travel exactly according to the traditional Qinghai-Gansu Grand Loop route, the most worthwhile scenery such as Qinghai Lake, Chaka Salt Lake, Qarhan Salt Lake, Dunhuang, Zhangye Danxia, and Qilian Grassland can still all be experienced, and the entire journey is smoother and more worry-free.
